In the film 'A Few Good Men', Jack Nicholson tells Tom Cruise that he "can't handle the..." what?
"You can't handle the truth," is said by Colonel Nathan R. Jessup (played by Jack Nicholson) to court martial lawyer Daniel Kaffee (played by Tom Cruise) in the 1992 film 'A Few Good Men'. Kaffee had exposed Jessup's false testimony about the death of a Marine named Santiago and was pressing Jessup for the truth.
Since the premiere of the film, the phrase has been used to refuse to give someone information because they are too sensitive. In other words, they would not be able to deal with the emotional impact of the truth. Several television shows have quoted the saying, including 'Seinfeld' in 1994. Later, in 1998, Burger King used the line in their TV commercial.
Parodies of the phrase have also appeared in which the word "truth" is replaced by another. One example is "You want my statement? You can't handle my statement!", which was quoted in Episode 356 of the 'Star Wars' webcomic 'Darths and Droids' in 2009. In 2011, the website 'TV Tropes' created a web page called 'You Can't Handle The Parody', which listed the many examples of the quote in popular culture.
