The names of the four horses used by Judah Ben-Hur in the great chariot race in the 1959 film, "Ben Hur" are Aldebaran, Altair, Antares, and Rigel. These horses were named for stars in the sky. Their mother's name is Mera. The horses are important because they help Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) defeat his once childhood friend and subsequent adult enemy.

In the film, during a fierce battle, Ben-Hur saves the life of a Roman officer (Quintus Arrius), played by Jack Hawkins. Arrius adopts Judah as a son and returns him (Ben-Hur) to his life of nobility. Judah will then continue his search for his missing mother and sister. In the time after his re-birth, Ben-Hur meets an Arab sheikh (Hugh Griffith) with a magnificent stable of four Arabian white horses. They are the horses that will compete and win the annual chariot race. They race against Messala played by Stephen Boyd (Ben-Hur's big foe). Messala had consecutively won the race for the past four years.
