In the historical novels by Lindsey Davis, what is the occupation of the ancient Roman Marcus Didius Falco?
In the novels of the English writer Lindsey Davis (born 1949) Marcus Didius Falco is a private investigator, or as he terms himself, "informer". Set starting in 70 CE, they mainly centre on Rome itself, though Falco, in the course of duty, makes trips to elsewhere in Italy, as well as to present day Germany and Britain, and in one instance (in the appropriately name novel "Alexandria") to ancient Egypt.
The first novel in the series, "The Silver Pigs", was published in 1989, and the last to date (January 2022), "Nemesis", in 2010. Since then Davis has concentrated on the spin-off series about Falco's adopted daughter Flavia, though further Falco novels have not been ruled out. They have won many awards, including Silver and Diamond Daggers from the Crime Writers' Association.
The novels blend great historical detail with a modern vernacular - for instance, Falco refers to himself as being "in the zone"! We also learn details of his personal life, principally his relationship with the aristocratic Helena Justinia, though his cantankerous but endearing mother also features large.
Readers may be interested to know that Lindsey benefited from a donated cornea and now is heavily involved in fundraising for transplant donation.
