This international multi-sport event became the first Olympics to be held in Canada. During the selection of the host city, representatives from different small countries voted for Montreal as a neutral site for the games, as the other two competors were Los Angeles and Moscow. Montreal was awarded the rights to the 1976 Games on May 12, 1970, at the 69th IOC Session in Amsterdam. The opening ceremony took place on the 17th of July at the Olympic Stadium with an audience of 73 thousand people. Another half billion people watched it on TV.
