Ivan Lendl was born on 7th March 1960 in the city of Ostrava in the Moravian-Silesian Region of Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). He became the national age group champion at 12 years of age and defeated his mother in a tennis game for the first time when he was 14. His mother, Olga, was at one point ranked the number two female player in the country.
In 1978, Lendl started playing tennis professionally, winning both the Wimbledon and French Open junior titles for boys. By the end of the year, he was the world's number one junior player. In 1979 he reached his first top-level singles final and won seven singles titles in 1980.
Lendl relocated to the United States in 1981, and the following year, won 15 of the 23 singles tournaments he entered. On 28th February 1983, Lendl became the world’s number one adult tennis player and remained in the top spot for 270 weeks. Over the length of his career, he played in 18 Grand Slam singles finals, winning eight of them.
In 1989, Lendl married Samantha Frankel, with whom he went on to have five daughters. He became a U.S. citizen in 1992 and retired from professional tennis two years later. For a while, Lendl took up playing golf but returned to the tennis world in 2011 to coach British player Andy Murray.
