In what year did the volcano that inspired the movie "Krakatoa, East of Java" erupt?
The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa in the Dutch East Indies (the territory of modern Indonesia) began on the 26th of August, 1883, and culminated with several destructive eruptions of the remaining caldera. On the 27th of August, two-thirds of Krakatoa collapsed in a chain of titanic explosions, destroying most of the island and its surrounding archipelago.
This natural disaster inspired a 1969 movie Krakatoa, East of Java. The characters of the film are challenged with the recovery of the a cargo of pearls from a shipwreck which took place close to the famous volcano. Actually, the film was only loosely based on the actual event, which became just a kind of background for the main plot. By the way, even the volcano is located not east, but west of Java. The critics and the audience highly praised the film's visual effects, for which it was nominated for an Oscar.
