Hercule Poirot first appeared in chapter 'two' of the Agatha Christie's first published novel, 'The Mysterious Affair at Styles'. The novel was completed in 1916 but not published until 1920.

The first description of Poirot was given by Hastings, who described Poirot as not more than five feet four inches by height. Hastings mentioned Poirot's great dignity. He said that Poirot's head was exactly shape of an egg, and he always perched it a little on one side. He also believed that speck of dust would have caused him more pain than a bullet wound. Actually Hastings was most frequent narrator of Poirot stories.

Poirot was a retired Belgium police officer who turned world famous private detective. He took great pride in his appearance from his immaculately groomed black moustache to his patent leather shoes. He was the only fictional character to have received an obituary on the front of the New York times in 1975.

In an article in 1938, Agatha Christie recounted Poirot's favourite cases. In 2014, Harper Collins published the first Poirot continuation novel, 'The Monogram Murders' by Sophie Hanah.
