India is a federal state in South Asia, with its capital in New Delhi. At 3,287,263 km², India is the seventh largest country in the world by area, while with 1.4 billion inhabitants (2023), it is the most populous country in the world, along with China.

Under the reign of Emperor Aurangzeb, India was the world's strongest and most productive economy, accounting for a quarter (25%) of global GDP, with annual revenues ten times greater than those of the French Empire. Gradually annexed by the British East India Company from the early decades of the 18th century and colonized by the United Kingdom from the mid-19th century, India became a modern nation-state in 1947, following a struggle for independence characterized by widespread nonviolent resistance led by Gandhi.
