In which country is the Booming Ice Chasm, an ice cave located?
The Booming Ice Chasm is an ice cave in Alberta, Canada, situated in the Rocky Mountains region of Crowsnest Pass.
Members of the Alberta Speleological Society initially discovered the entrance to the Booming Ice Chasm by mistake while attempting to enter a separate cave in June 2008. The Alberta Speleological Society subsequently investigated it and mapped it. Speleologist Chas Yonge believed it was North America's largest ice cave. Since the main shaft is an inclined passage that is not fully vertical, it is considered the second deepest shaft in Canada because of the technical descent requirements.
It is a freeze-trap cave whereby cold air enters through a bottleneck and can never exit, creating perennial ice conditions. The consequence of this is that a thick, cascading glacier-like ice block covers the entrance pitch and floor and there is an underground, frozen waterfall and lake.
It is suspected that as a source of new super antibiotics, Booming Ice Chasm may also have potential. This is because a specialized population of microorganisms is believed to have adapted to the cave's closed and nutrient-limited conditions.
