In which country was the TV5 network founded in 1984?
TV5 was created in 1984. The number 5 is a reference to the first five providers and founders: TF1, Antenne 2, FR3, TSR (Swiss-Romanesque Television) and RTBF (Belgian Radio-Television of the French Community).
The programming is based on the transmission of films, series or telefilms, documentaries, news magazines, entertainment, culture, music, youth programs and sports in French.
In 1988, it was decided to broadcast across the Atlantic, in the former New France. This new transmission was called TV5 Québec-Canada. Then, in 1991, TV5 Africa arrived on the African continent, the following year, some programming began to be broadcast throughout Latin America and other Caribbean islands.
In 1996, TV5's coverage area was extended to the Asian continent. In 1998, it arrived in the US. In 1999, the TV5 France-Belgium-Switzerland signal began to be broadcast, with a specific destination for Francophone Europe.
From the September 11 attacks in 2001 to the 2003 Iraq War, the media coverage put the spotlight on TV5's particular way of broadcasting news bulletins from its member public broadcasters. International conflicts arising from the decision to go to war by the USA and the UK in which France notably refused to participate had relaunched the debate over whether to create an international news channel from a French perspective, resulting in the 2006 launch of France 24.
In 2006, it changed its logo to TV5 MONDE, a name with which it accentuates its global focus.
