In which country would you find Malleco Viaduct bridge?
The Malleco Viaduct is a railway bridge located in central Chile, passing over the Malleco River valley, south of Collipulli in the Araucania Region. It was opened by President José Manuel Balmaceda on October 26, 1890. At that time, it was the highest such bridge in the world.
Designed by Aurelio Lastarria and the construction of the bridge was awarded to Schneider et Cie. O Le Creusot, another French company. The bridge was declared a national monument in 1990.
The total weight of the viaduct, measured section by section at the workshops, amounted to 1.401.344 kilograms (3.088.676 lbs) Once the bridge was laid out, temporary resting on hydraulic jacks placed on the piers and stirrups, the assembly of the first headset was finished, and the bridge was lowered to its definitive position by means of the jacks till it rested on the large cast iron supports.
In February 1890, the sliding of the beam took place after a very complex operation. Its length of 347.5 meters (1,140 ft), divided in five equal sections of 69.5 meters (228 ft) each. The bridge rests on its two end stirrups and four intermediate piers, all of them made of steel. The first and fourth piers are 43.7 meters (154 ft) high, the second 67.7 m (222 ft), and the third 75.7 m (248 ft). The rails are at a height of 102 meters (334 ft) above the bottom of the gorge. Later on, diagonal reinforcements were inserted between the beam and the towers for the structure to bear the weight of more modern trains.
