The stadium was named after the famous Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan, who was born in the city.

Amitabh Bachchan (born 11th of October 1942) is an Indian film actor, producer, television host, and former politician. He first gained popularity in the early 1970s for Indian crime action films such as 'Zanjeer', 'Deewaar' and 'Sholay', and was dubbed India's "angry young man" for his on-screen roles in Bollywood.

The stadium is the only indoor stadium in the city, and has a capacity of 4,000. It is owned and managed by UP Sports Directorate.

The stadium has facilities for basketball, volleyball, tennis, squash, table-tennis, badminton, and gymnastics. The stadium is the first of its kind in Uttar Pradesh.
