From Michael Jackson's seventh solo album, "Bad" (1987), the song "Man in the Mirror", with lyrics and music by Glen Ballard and Siedah Garrett and produced by Jackson and Quincy Jones, was released in February 1988. This was the fourth single released from the album and a gospel choir is used by Jackson to help him in incorporating elements of spirituals, blues, and jazz while recording "Man in the Mirror".

Both fans and music pundits agreed with Michael when he pointed out, "The song is about making a change and realizing that it has to start with you. ... The song is deeper than just the visual of a man looking at himself in the mirror. To make a difference on the outside, you have to first start from within." The big consensus in the end is that Michael just got it... he got the meaning of the song right away.

Additionally, according to the American Songwriters Guild (ASG), Michael loved this song so much that it is the only song where he had lyrics quoted on the album cover. Not the whole song, but the key line: “If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change.” So it makes great sense why Michael loved the song.
