World War II (WWII or WW2), also known as the Second World War, was a global military conflict that officially lasted from 1939 to 1945 (but some important conflicts related to the war took place even earlier).
The start of the war in Europe is generally held to be 1 September 1939, beginning with the German invasion of Poland and the declaration of war on Germany by Britain and France.
The final battles of the WWII took place in early May 1945. The German Instrument of Surrender was signed on the 7th of May, 1945. The German surrender finally put an end to this murderous and prolonged war, which is considered to be the deadliest in history. The estimated number of deaths varies from 60 to more than 80 million people.

The discussion fails to mention that the War did not end with the surrender of Germany as Japan was still waging an unrelenting conflict in the Pacific!

An invasion is not a war. The German invasion of Poland was the catalyst for WWII, but the war itself did not begin until 1939 when both Britain and France declared war with Germany as a result.

Patricia Olsen, I can assure you it was a world war BEFORE the US entered, with Countries from every part of the earth involved. In North America, Canada was fighting, in Africa fighting was going on all along the North African coast and troops from many African Nations were involved from South Africa, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Sudan, Ethiopia and more. Countries such as New Zealand and Australia and other smaller Pacific Nations were also at War. Every continent had Countries involved in the war, making it truly a World War! The USA was one of the last to enter this World War.Your lack of historical knowledge is abysmal.

Thank you Richard! It would have been nice if the war had ended in April. Then we wouldn't have had to drop a couple of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 with the loss of thousands and thousands of more lives.

Mind you they are at least consistent, they did the same in WW1.
Were not successful in Viet-nam, got whipped by a peasant army.
Quite good at invading places like Dominican republic or Haiti,not so at the Bag of Pigs, Cuba.
