The territory of what is now Iowa has been inhabited by American Indians for more than 13,000 years. The first European explorers documented the area in 1673. They described several Indian villages on the Iowa side. Much of the state was mapped in 1805. However, the first American settlers officially moved to the state only in 1833.

Iowa was admitted to Union on the 28th of December, 1846.
