John Edgar Hoover (1895-1972) was an American politician and the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States. He was originally appointed director of the Bureau of Investigation, which preceded the FBI, before helping to found the FBI in 1935. Hoover remained the director until his death in 1972 at age 77.

The FBI is an agency that investigates crime across the United States and is dedicated to national security and law enforcement. The FBI also works worldwide, but its headquarters remain in Washington DC. Amongst its many tasks, the FBI protects the United States from terrorist attacks, espionage, cyber-based attacks, international criminal organizations, violent crime and fraud.

President Harry S Truman feared Hoover was transforming the FBI into his private secret police force. Truman stated that "we want no Gestapo or secret police. FBI is tending in that direction. They are dabbling in sex-life scandals and plain blackmail. J. Edgar Hoover would give his right eye to take over, and all congressmen and senators are afraid of him". Backing up Truman's fears were Hoover's large collection of pornography, which included photos of Joan Crawford, Frank Sinatra, Warren Beatty, and Tony Curtis.

Hoover was born on 1st January 1895 in Washington DC and died from heart failure in the same city in 1972. Hoover was homosexual and it is unknown if Hoover and his political partner Clyde Tolson were ever in a relationship.
