Mr. Bumble was a fictional character of the renowned novel by Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist. Mr. Bumble is the mean, pompous and cruel beadle of the poorhouse where the orphaned Oliver is raised. He is fond of power and money. Actually, the author does show that Mr. Bumble has a heart in several scenes, but in the end he just doesn't want to show any pity and prefers showing-off.

Mr. Bumble marries into money. His wife, the poorhouse matron, Mrs. Corney, is a tyrannical woman who often beats and humiliates him. In response to learning that a husband bears legal responsibility for his wife’s actions, Mr. Bumble utters the celebrated line “If the law supposes that—the law is a ass - a idiot".
