The Richter scale is a standard scale used to evaluate earthquakes. It is a logarithmic scale, meaning that the numbers on the scale measure factors of 10. For instance, an earthquake that measures 4.0 on the Richter scale is 10 times larger than one that measures 3.0. So an earthquake measuring 8.0 would be 10,000 times stronger than an earthquake measuring 4.0 on this scale.

According to the statistics, Japan is the most earthquakes-vulnerable country in the world. But Indonesia, also locating in seismic zone, has actually more powerful and injurious trembles. So, the ground feels more shaking in Indonesia.

The largest earthquake measured 9.5 on the scale and happened in Chile (1960). It was a swarm of earthquakes which resulted in tsunami.
