On which river does Moscow stand?

The Moskva River, aka the Moscow River (the English variant), rises about 140 km (90 mi) west of Moscow, and flows roughly east through the Smolensk and Moscow provinces, passing through central Moscow and creating the wonderful cityscape of the capital. The beautiful banks of the river are seen from the downtown Moscow, and Kremlin Quay is a place loved by all the visitors and residents of the city.

Actually, the capital of the Russian Federation was named after this river, and in Russian the name of the city sounds as "Moskva" as well, but it is always referred to as Moscow in English.

But it is not direct tributary of the Volga. Moscow River mouth into Oka river which mouth into Volga.

It's the Moskva river and that's how it's known to most people! I don't know when they started calling it the Moscow river but it makes the answers really confusing! I got it correct because I'm a geography freak but I used a double chance help just in case you used some other answer. Lately that's been happening a lot!

The Moskva is a river of western Russia. It rises about 140 km (90 mi) west of Moscow, and flows roughly east through the Smolensk and Moscow Oblasts, passing through central Moscow. About 110 km (70 mi) south east of Moscow, at the city of Kolomna, it flows into the Oka, itself a tributary of the Volga, which ultimately flows into the Caspian Sea.
