As a central character in the U.S. TV series "Cheers", Sam Malone (Ted Danson) was a former relief pitcher for the Major League Boston Red Sox baseball team. Later he became the owner and bartender of the bar called Cheers. Danson would become well known because of his role as Sam in "Cheers", which he had from 1982 to 1993. For his acting, Danson earned a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor (Comedy Series) in 1989 and 1990.

Raised outside of Flagstaff, Arizona, Danson (b. 1947) attended Stanford University when he was a young man. He became interested in drama during his second year. In 1972, he transferred to Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After graduation, he was hired as an under study in Tom Stoppard's Off Broadway production of "The Real Inspector Hound." He moved to Los Angeles, California in 1978; he studied at the Actor's Institute. His acting career was solidly established in the 1980s.
