Sgt. James Doakes was a police detective and fictional character on which popular U.S. TV series?

On the popular 2006 — 2013 U.S. TV series "Dexter", Sgt. James Doakes plays the role of a fictional police detective. Sgt. Doakes is portrayed by Erik King, and he is an officer with the Miami-Metro Police Department's Homicide Division. He is also Dexter Morgan's arch-nemesis, the only person who can see the darkness beneath Dexter's charming, friendly exterior. He intensely dislikes Dexter (Michael C. Hall); he calls Dexter a "freak" and "psycho" at every opportunity.

Doakes truly harbors a great deal of anger and darkness of his own, and he often comes very close to breaking the law when dealing with criminal suspects. Dexter suspects that Doakes can see his "Dark Passenger" (true criminal persona). Dexter believes that Doakes also has his own homicidal urges. Doakes however is not without suitable human qualities. He is protective of his mother and sisters, and he manages to be friendly with his superior officer (and former lover) Maria LaGuerta (Luna Lauren Velez). Dexter's sister, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), tries to comfort them both when their mutual colleague and friend Angel Batista (David Zayas) is shot.

In the TV series, Doakes eventually discovers that Dexter is a serial killer. Before he can tell anyone, he is killed by Dexter's former lover Lila Tournay (Jaime Murray).
