The Turtles are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1965. The band formed with Howard Kaylan on lead vocals, Mark Volman on backing vocals, Al Nichol on lead guitar, Jim Tucker on acoustic and rhythm guitars, Chuck Portz on bass guitar, and Don Murray on drums.
Before the band formed as the Turtles, they were originally called 'The Nightriders' in 1963, and then 'The Crossfires' from 1963 to 1965, before changing their name to 'The Tyrtles' (spelt with a 'y' to simulate The Byrds) and then to the grammatically-correct "The Turtles", all in 1965.
The group would later go on to achieve several Top 40 hits throughout the latter half of the 1960s, including 'It Ain't Me Babe' (1965), 'You Baby' (1966), 'Happy Together' (1967), 'She'd Rather Be with Me' (1967) and 'Elenore' (1968).
