The US presidential election of 1824 was between Andrew Jackson of Tennessee and John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts. Jackson won 41.4% (151,271) of the popular vote while John Quincy Adams won 30.9% (113,122) of the popular vote. With respect to the electoral college vote, Jackson won 99 votes while Adams won 84. However, 131 electoral votes (majority) out of 261 votes were needed to win. The election was decided by the House of Representatives (Adams won 13 states while Jackson won 7 states) under the provisions of the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution after no candidate secured a majority of the electoral vote. John Quincy Adams became the sixth President of the US.

George W. Bush, Rutherford B. Hayes, and Benjamin Harrison lost the popular vote but won the majority of the electoral college vote to become US President.
