Sinn Fein is a political party that is active in attempts to gain independence for the country of Ireland. It was seen as an Irish republican political party dedicated to the reunification of Ireland and an end to British jurisdiction in the north of Ireland. It does not care about religion but it opposes the loyalists, who wish to stay part of the UK, most of whom happen to be Protestant.

As an Irish political party, it was founded in 1905 by Arthur Griffith. Its breakout actions during the Irish Civil War in 1922 and again at the beginning of the Troubles in 1969 had dramatic effects on politics in Ireland. Some within the organization want some sort of relationship with Britain. From its beginning until today, Irish unity was and is the be-all and end-all of their policy. Sinn Fein was a constitutional party, and in fact, at the British general elections in 1918, Sinn Fein won the majority of seats throughout the island of Ireland. This event was the one that gave them the animus in the past to conduct a violent campaign against the British in the War of Liberation. It was that war at the time which persuaded the British to withdraw from Ireland. This was done through a partition settlement which is still in existence today.

As of 2019, organized in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, Sinn Fein wants an end to the political partition of the island of Ireland. It is embodying an ideology that is variously characterized as nationalism and Republicanism.
