The Academy Award-winning song "Swinging on a Star" is from the 1944 motion picture "Going My Way". The film is an American musical comedy-drama that was directed and produced by Leo McCarey. Main stars are Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald. The film's screenplay is by Frank Butler and Frank Cavett based on a story by McCarey. The film is about a new young priest taking over a parish from an established old veteran. Crosby sings five songs in the film, with other songs performed onscreen by Metropolitan Opera's star mezzo-soprano, Risë Stevens (in the role of a famous Metropolitan Opera performer). The Robert Mitchell Boys Choir play juvenile delinquents turned into a choir.

Father Charles O'Malley (Crosby) is an easy-going, golf-playing young priest whose entry into a tough neighborhood parish in midtown Manhattan is viewed with scepticism, especially the ageing Father Fitzgibbon (vFitzgerald). While dealing with some unfinished business from his former life in the form of an old flame, who sings at the Metropolitan Opera (Stevens), the new priest is able to make astute and required changes.

While the parish is facing financial problems, the boys' choir inspired by Father O'Malley has an opportunity to sing at the Metropolitan Opera. After an initial failure, the choir decides to make the most of the opportunity on the grand stage. It sings the song, "Swinging on a Star". A music executive overhears the song and decides to buy it; the church can pay off its mortgage.
