The ancient city, built by Romulus, was standing on a famous group of seven hills, which were:

  • Aventine Hill
  • Caelian Hill
  • Capitoline Hill
  • Esquiline Hill
  • Palatine Hill
  • Quirinal Hill
  • Viminal Hill

In fact, as legend has it, Romulus founded his city on the Palatine Hill, and the other hills were occupied by smaller separate settlements. Later all the settlements started acting as a group and the swampland between them was reclaimed; the city of Rome came into being. Capitoline hill, which used to be the place of many fortresses, remains the only distinct hill of Rome today. Anyway, every hill has its history, which is still well-remembered nowadays.
