The Battle of Hastings was fought in 1066. The English army, commanded by King Harold II (Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex), was defeated by Norman-French forces commanded by Duke William II of Normandy. Duke William claimed the English throne following the death of King Edward, but Harold Godwinson attempted to keep the English throne within England and was declared King September 1066. The following month, Duke William invaded England, defeated and killed King Harold in battle. December 1066, Duke William was declared King of England.
