The British Shorthair is a cat breed that hails from Great Britain. Known for its medium to large size, this breed is easily recognizable by its round head and large, round eyes.

The first cat show took place in 1871 at the Crystal Palace in London. English breeders, such as H. Weir, selected the finest domestic cats to be showcased for the first time. They were named British Shorthair to distinguish them from foreign oriental cats and long-haired breeds.

The British Shorthair is akin to the European Shorthair on the continent and the American Shorthair in the United States. It's likely that by the early 1900s, British Shorthairs were imported to the U.S., although they were registered as "Domestic Shorthair" until the 1950s.
