Bangka Island lies east of Sumatra, Indonesia and has a population of around 1 million comprising mainly Malays and Chinese. The capital is Pangkal Pinang.

Since the early 18th century, Bangka has been one of the world's principal tin-producing centres of which, the Indonesian government holds a monopoly. The island is the second largest tin producer and exporter in the world with China being the largest though not by much. Bangka's production in 2019 was 80,000 tonnes. China's in the same year 85,000 tonnes.

While it is tin mining which generates the most revenue for the island and employs the greater majority of its population, palm oil plantations, rubber plantations, fishing and white pepper farms also provide work for its inhabitants.
