The Haitian Revolution was a successful anti-slavery and anti-colonial insurrection by self-liberated slaves against French colonial rule. At the time, Haiti was called Saint-Domingue. The revolution began on August 22, 1791, and ended in 1804 when Haiti became a sovereign nation, independent of France.

Toussaint L'Overture (1743-1803) was an ex-slave who emerged as Haiti's most charismatic hero of the revolution. He was a French General who first fought for the Spanish against the French, then for France against Spain and Great Britain, and finally, he helped transform the slave insurrection into a revolutionary movement.

It was the only slave uprising that led to the founding of a state which was both free from slavery and ruled by non-whites and former captives. Its effects on the institution of slavery were felt throughout the Americas. The Haitian Revolution represented the largest slave uprising since Spartacus' unsuccessful revolt against the Roman Republic nearly 1,900 years earlier.
