Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (29 September 106 BC – 28 September 48 BC), known in English as Pompey or Pompey the Great, was a leading Roman general and statesman. He played a significant role in the transformation of Rome from Republic to Empire. He was (for a time) a student of Roman general Sulla as well as the political ally (and later enemy) of Julius Caesar.

Julia (c. 76 BC – 54 BC) was the only daughter of Roman dictator Julius Caesar by his wife Cornelia. Julia became the fourth wife of Pompey the Great and was renowned for her beauty and virtue.

Gaius Julius Caesar (12 July 100 BC – 15 March 44 BC) was a Roman general and statesman. In 60 BC, Caesar, Crassus and Pompey formed the First Triumvirate. Caesar led the Roman armies in the Gallic Wars before defeating Pompey in a civil war and governing the Roman Republic as a dictator from 49 BC until his assassination in 44 BC. He played a critical role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire.
