The picture is the fictional character Tonto, who was a Mohawk from the Six Nations Indian Reserve in Ontario, Canada. Tonto was a companion of the 'Lone Ranger, a popular American Western character created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker.

The 'Lone Ranger' was a fictional masked former Texas Ranger who fought outlaws in the American Old West with Tonto. The character has been called an undying icon of American culture. The radio series proved to be a hit and spawned a series of comic books, a movie series that started in 1938 and then an equally popular TV show that ran from 1949 to 1957.

The 'Lone Ranger' was so named became the character was the sole survivor of a posse of 6 Texas Rangers who were ambushed in a canyon by a band of outlaws led by 'Butch' Cavendish. Later, a Native American Indian named Tonto stumbles onto the scene and nurses the sole surviving Ranger back to health.

Tonto recognizes the surviving Ranger as the man who saved his life when they were both children. According to the TV series, Tonto gave the Ranger a ring and the name 'Kemo Sabe' which meant 'trusty scout' or 'faithful friend'. The Ranger's trademark silver bullets, and the theme music from the 'William Tell Overture' have become tropes of popular culture.
