José Julián Martí Pérez: 28 January 1853 – 19 May 1895) was a prolific writer from Cuba and offered many writings in the forms of polemics, novels, and poetry. He was active in rebelling against Spain to allow Cuba its independence in the late 19th century. He has been referred to as the "Apostle of Cuban Independence."The international airport in his home town of Havana is named after him.

In the moving words of Guantanamera, a few lines show his writing style: "I am an honest man from the land of the palm trees, and before going, I want to share the poems of my soul. " Later in the poem, " With the poor people of the Earth, I want to share my destiny. The stream of the mountain pleases me more than the sea."

After Martí died, his poem was put to a popular tune, and the song "Guantanamera" was born. It became popular, most notably sung by various artists in the 1960s and 1970s.
