'Versailles' is a French historical fiction drama set during the reign of Louis XIV (1638-1715) at the time the Palace of Versailles was being constructed. It first aired in 2015 and ran for three seasons.

The series began in the wake of a series of civil wars in 1667. The French are defying and disobeying the young King Louis XIV (played by George Blagden), who decides to move the royal court from the 'Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye' near Paris to the hamlet of Versailles. Here, the king starts renovating and expanding his new palace, whilst the French nobility become involved in dangerous plots and schemes.

'Versailles' was created by the British writers Simon Mirren and David Wolstencroft. Wolstencroft is best known as the creator of the award-winning TV spy drama 'Spooks', and Mirren is the nephew of the actress Helen Mirren.

The first season of 'Versailles' received mixed reviews from critics. It was aired in France in 2015, and in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada in 2016. The second season premiered in 2017, and the third and final season was shown on Netflix in 2019.
