The Greek alphabet, derived primarily from Cyrillic and Latin, became a basis of early civilization. Recall that the word "alphabet" is derived from the names of the first two letters, alpha and beta. That portion of the order of the letters agrees with those in many European languages. Moving beyond that, however, differences begin. In the Greek alphabet, the third letter is gamma, pronounced and sounded like a hard G. In Cyrillic, the order is closer to A, B, V, G in sounds. The third letter in Greek and the fourth letter in Cyrillic have the same visual appearance and have the same hard G sound.
