The creation of a reality real estate series was announced in July 2005. It was called "Million Dollar Listing: Hollywood". This title was later change to "Million Dollar Listing". "Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles" (previously "Million Dollar Listing") is the title the television series used when it actually debuted on the Bravo Network on August 29, 2006.

During the first season, this reality series showcased two real estate agencies, one in Hollywood and one in Malibu. Numerous agents with various skills were featured on the show (including Madison Hildebrand, who has also appeared in later seasons). The show has directly focused on real estate listings, starting from the beginning of the selling process to the close.

The series has specifically chronicled the professional and personal lives of realtors in the real estate Industry based in Beverly Hills, Hollywood, and Malibu, California as they sell high-end properties. "Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles" has also given viewers an inside look at the world of high-priced real estate in Los Angeles County.

This series' success has subsequently resulted in three spin-offs: Million Dollar Listing New York, Miami, and San Francisco.
