South Korea is located in East Asia, on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula located out from the far east of the Asian landmass. The only country with a land border to South Korea is North Korea. South Korea is mostly surrounded by water and its coastline runs along three seas; to the west is the Yellow Sea, to the south is the East China Sea, and to the east is the Sea of Japan.

Located between Mainland China and the Korean peninsula, the marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean, which is the northern part of East China Sea, is called the Yellow Sea. The area of the Yellow Sea is 960 km (596 miles) from north to south and some 700 km (434 miles) from east to west. The depth is just 44 meters (144 ft) and slightly increases as it moves towards the south.

The climate around the area is generally dry and cold and witnesses strong monsoons from November to March. The summers on the other hand are wet and warm and the temperature in the area ranges between 10-28 degree Celsius (50-82 F). The winters are too cold and often navigation in the northern part is hindered due to the ice sheets that cover the surface of the water.

The name Yellow Sea comes from the golden yellow color that it gets from the sand particles and storms from the Gobi desert. Additionally, the northwestern section of the Yellow Sea called the Bohai Sea and the Hai River flowing into it from China adds to the color of the Yellow Sea by bringing in deposits of sand and silt.
