Paraguay, officially the Republic of Paraguay, is a small, landlocked country in South America. It is bordered to the north and east by Brazil, the west by Bolivia, and the south and southeast by Argentina. Although it is a landlocked country, Paraguay has beaches and ports on the Paraguay and Paraná rivers. The capital city Asunción, for instance, is a major port on the Paraguay River. Asunción was founded in 1537 by the Spaniard Juan de Salazar. Paraguay was a colony of Spain until its independence in 1811.

Paraguay has two official languages, Spanish and Guaraní. The latter is spoken by the majority of Paraguay's 7 million population. 'Mestizos' (mixed European and Amerindian) make up 80% of the population and over 20% live below the poverty line. Approximately, 90% of the population identify as Roman Catholic.

Bolivia, officially the Plurinational State of Bolivia, is the other landlocked country in South America. It is bordered by Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Peru, and Chile. Bolivia has a much higher population than Paraguay, with an estimated 11.51 million in 2019. Bolivia is named after Simón Bolívar, who liberated the country from Spain. The main languages are Spanish and Quechua, which originated among the Indigenous people of Peru before spreading to other countries
