‘Hongik Ingan’ is the unofficial national motto and the official educational motto of South Korea. It can be translated to English as, ‘To broadly benefit the human world’. ‘Hongik Ingan’ is the founding idea of Gojoseon (the first Korean kingdom) and is known as the first concept founded by Dangun Wanggeom, its legendary founder.

The term 'Hongik Ingan' appears in the myth of Dangun, god-king of Gojoseon. He is said to be the ‘grandson of heaven’ and ‘son of a bear’, and to have founded the kingdom in 2333 BC. He is said to have had a founding ideology, such as 'widely benefiting people’.
