To which old profession is this sculpture in Georgia dedicated?
Tbilisi is the capital of the country of Georgia. Its cobblestoned old town reflects a long, complicated history, with periods under Persian and Russian rule. Its diverse architecture encompasses Eastern Orthodox churches, ornate art nouveau buildings and Soviet Modernist structures.
Picasso said that ‘sculpture is the art of the intelligence‘. The people of Tbilisi must also feel the same, as this incredible city is filled with sculpture. Bronze people, alive, but in a different way, dancing out of walls or going about their daily chores.
If you walk down Baratashvili Street you’ll encounter this lamplighter, by Irakli Tsuladze, up on his ladder, tending to the city so that no one walks in the dark. It’s a beautiful ode to a forgotten profession.
