Italian numbers are usually written as a single word. Whilst in English the number 21 is written as two words, 'twenty one', the number is written as 'ventuno' in Italian. The number 20 is 'venti' but it drops the final vowel when combined with a number that begins with a vowel, for instance, 'uno' (1).

To write 121, Italians combine the numbers for 100, 20 and 1. This results in the lengthy word 'centoventuno', with 'cento' meaning 'hundred'. Despite its spelling, 'cento' is pronounced "CHEN-toh".

Following this logic, 1121 is 'millecentoventuno', where 'mille' means 'thousand'. Two million, on the other hand, is 'duemila', therefore, 2121 is 'duemilacentoventuno'.

As can be expected, some numbers can reach considerable lengths, for instance, 2221 is 'duemiladuecentoventuno'. More often than not, it is far simpler to write numbers in numerical form when writing in Italian.
