Walter Pidgeon (1897 – 1984) had an acting role in the 1941 American drama film "How Green Was My Valley" directed by John Ford, the 1942 American romantic war drama film "Mrs. Miniver" directed by William Wyler, and the 1956 science fiction film "Forbidden Planet" directed by Fred M. Wilcox. Respectively, he played Mr. Gruffydd, Clem Miniver, and Dr. Edward Morbius in the films.

Pidgeon did not act in or have any kind of association with the 1941 biographical film "Sergeant York", a film about the life of Alvin C. York, one of the most decorated American soldiers of World War I. This film stars Gary Cooper in the title role, Walter Brennan, Joan Leslie, George Tobias, Stanley Ridges, Margaret Wycherly, and Ward Bond. Others in supporting roles include: Noah Beery Jr., June Lockhart, Clem Bevans, Dickie Moore, Howard Da Silva, Charles Trowbridge, Harvey Stephens, David Bruce, Charles Esmond, Joseph Sawyer, Pat Flaherty, Robert Porterfield, and Erville Alderson.

"Sergeant York" was directed by Howard Hawks and produced by Hawks, Jesse L. Lasky, and Hal B. Wallis. The screenplay was based on the diary of Sergeant Alvin York, as edited by Tom Skeyhill, and adapted by Harry Chandlee, Abem Finkel, John Huston, Howard E. Koch, and Sam Cowan (uncredited). The film was a critical and commercial success, and became the highest-grossing film of 1941.

Cooper won the Oscar for Best Actor, while the film also won Best Film Editing and was nominated in nine other categories.
