Plant mutations which develop flowers that are colored differently from those of the mother plant are called sports. A horticulturist such as Chris Baines (b. May 1947) and noted experts working in botany have written that a sport or bud sport, traditionally called lusus, is a part of a plant that will typically show morphological differences from the rest of the plant. Sports that appear may differ by foliage shape or color, flowers, fruit, or branch structure. The cause will generally be a chance genetic mutation.

Beside gardening experts who say that mutations are random and are a result of a change within the cells of the plant, they believe that most mutations in appearance (sports) are often triggered by cold weather, temperature fluctuations, or insect damage.
