The currency used nowadays in Vatican is the euro, even if Vatican doesn't belong to Eurozone or the European Union. Vatican's own set of euro coins is minted in Rome. Until now 4 different series of coins have been released, each dedicated to significant events. The last one designed in 2014 features effigies of Pope Francis.

The lira was the currency of Vatican between 1929 and 2002 (Italian coins were also in use), and then the euro became available.
