What do Christians celebrate on Ash Wednesday?

Deborah Massey: Catholics were the first Christians because they believe in Christ as Lord and Savior. They were first called "Christians" and later the word "Catholic" because it means "as a whole"--everyone that believes in Christ. The Mass has readings from the Bible, the Psalms, Gospels, Letters and the Hebrew Scriptures. You need to inform yourself before you make statements like that.

Ash Wednesday is not in the Bible and therefore cannot be called a Christian holiday. It's a catholic tradition, no more no less

I say that people that believe in Jesus are Christians.

In Europe Tuesday before Ash wednesday, is also called Pancake Tuesday, I make them only on that day, however, they are sweeter than the breakfast ones!

Yes Mary was the one God chose to bear the Son of GOD, but Mary needed a Savior just like all the human race to save her from sin We wonder why God chose Mary it's not because she was better than anyone else,it's because she was in the lineage of David where the prophcied Savior of the World would come from to die on a cruel Cross, and shed HIS Blood as the perfect Sacrifice for our redemption to those that believe!!

Catholics were NOT the first Christians. There was just the Christian church up until 1054 when the church split into two factions: Eastern Orthodox Christians and Catholics.

There aren't any Christian holidays in the Bible.

I've always said that ignorance abounds in the church. I agree Ralph Grounds Sr. Jesus came to make sons & daughters of God not "Christians". The title "Christian" was given to blood bought believer so and follows of Christ by pagans in the book of acts. HE came to raise A church not many churches (denominations). Let's not forget the book of Revelations where HE speaks to the seven churches. Let's not forget the 10 commandments where GOD says DO NOT put false idols before ME. And no God has not set aside the OT when he sent Jesus Christ, bc He came to fulfill the law not break it. Also for those who don't know own the Catholic Church has their own bible that contain extra books. Jesus Christ left us a gift, the Holy Spirit, and only the Holy Spirit can give us revelation of what is of God and what is not. It very clear in the bible where it exhorts us to test the spirits by the spirits to see where they come from. So instead of arguing about the word of God, let's try to seek Him through the Holy Spirit to receive conviction and true revelation. Gb!

Lent not Kent!

Kent began as a pagan ritual, it is not found in the Bible, that said many c.f. Christians participate in lent as a personal way to renew or to become closer to Christ following the days up until his crucifixion ( Ash Wednesday ) and Christ's resurrection (Easter) - which was combined with Pangan fertility practices(bunnies) However many Christians take this time to prepare themselves for the celebration of Christ's resurrection from the dead (Easter) Forty days before this event, as Jesus fasted for 40 days in the desert being tempted by Satan , we too take this time voluntarily to fast by either fasting from from foods that tempt us or fasting from social media that could take our mind off of Jesus or use our time in service to help those less fortunate. It is biblical but not found in the Bible. Using Christ as an example.

Doesn't matter what religion or culture you are, what's matter is that we love God and we love , or try , to love everybody else

Kevin Hugh you are right and that the way I see it. I'm catholic , I respect their traditions but I don't have to follow all of them. I believe in the ten comments and I follow that as my religion

Jesus said something about self righteiosness to the scribes and pharisees....why dont we all love one another and realize that everyone must work out their own salvation with fear and trembling and let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

It seems to me that the first Christian was the first one to believe Jesus and this was long before the Roman Catholic Church was formed. Read the scripture and you will see who first recognized Our Risen Lord But I dont think we should boast in anything except Jesus
