It seems we are still on the same wavelength. The idea of calling the ball a "ping pong" struck me as being totally off base.

Complete rubbish. I’m a life-long table tennis (or ping pong in a less formal way) player. I have never heard anyone refer to the ball as ping pong.

It's funny that everyone started calling the ball a "table tennis ball". Up to the age of about 12, I thought that it was a "ping-pong" ball. After that, it was identified by either name.
