What does a meteorologist do?

A meteorologist is an individual with specialized education who uses scientific principles to explain, understand, observe or forecast the earth's atmospheric phenomena and/or how the atmosphere affects the earth and life on the planet. This specialized education would be a bachelor's or higher degree in meteorology or an atmospheric science. Individuals who have little formal education in the atmospheric sciences, or who have taken only industry survey courses, and who disseminate weather information and forecasts prepared by others, are properly designated weathercasters.

You idiots have again asked a question with 2 (TWO) correct answers. I'm sure the meteorologist who predicts weather, based on atmospheric and other phenomena will be interested to know he's not predicting weather, he's observing atmospheric phenomina, commonly known as WEATHER!

Actually, there was only 1 correct answer. A meteorologist has a degree in weather, observing, then can predict forecasts. A weatherman on TV does not have to have a degree in meteorology to give a forecast, he just says what the meteorologist tells him to say. Now days, most weatherman on TV are meteorologists.

But only one answer that relates to the specific skills and training of a Meteorologist. "Disseminate" just means to spread or disperse, so Weathermen can report/communicate to the public what Meteorologists predict based on their expertise in interpreting satellite and radar images.

Meteorologists can also be weathermen, but weathermen do not have to be meteorologists. They know what to report in the same way a radio presenter knows how to report on traffic, for example -- they read what someone with knowledge (training, etc.) reports.

There is a difference between a Meteorologist and Weatherman. Meteorologists are scientists who study the atmosphere and predict weather based on expertise in interpreting satellite and radar images. Weathermen are not scientists, and simply report (disseminate) the information provided by the meteorologist. The weatherman's most important skill is being articulate.
