A phobia is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities, or persons. The main symptom of this disorder is the excessive, unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. Fear of fish or ichthyophobia ranges from cultural phenomena such as fear of eating fish, fear of touching raw fish, or fear of dead fish, up to irrational fear (specific phobia). The origin of the word "ichtyo" is Greek (meaning "fish") and "phobia" is Greek (meaning "fear"). Ichthyophobia is also related to Ostraconophobia (fear of shellfish) and Selachophobia (fear of sharks).
