What does the abbreviation SMS mean?
SMS (short message service) is a text messaging service component of most telephone, Internet, and mobile device systems. SMS was the most widely used data application at the end of 2010, with an estimated 3.5 billion active users, or about 80% of all mobile subscribers.
SMS, as used on modern devices, originated from radio telegraphy in radio memo pagers that used standardized phone protocols. These were defined in 1985 as part of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) series of standards. The first SMS message was sent in 1992.

Lancashireredrosebabe , I wholly endorse your comments. My grandfather, alas no longer with us, was deaf. Being able to communicate non-verbally is both an enhancement of the quality of life (specially at the moment) and can even be a lifesaver. That said I'm glad the deadline for missold purchase protection insurance has passed!!!!!

I would rather text someone, rather than call them if I can get away with it lol and I have a tendency to type rather long text messages, I am sure people get sick of me texting them.
