What does the Old English word "Score" mean?
The word score can have several meanings. Originally it meant: keeping count of something by making notches in a tally stick. Score is an old word for the number 20. It is used in the famous expression from the Gettysburg Address: "Four score and seven years ago..."

More interesting if you asked what is a score in Lowestoft?: The Lowestoft Scores can be found within the Harbour ward, mostly connecting the High Street and Whapload Road. There are 14 Scores in total, but two of these are no longer visible; Frost Alley Score and The Score. the 12 that remain start at the Ravine in the north, and continue south to Herring Fishery Score, next to the Police Station. The scores are an important part of Lowestoft's history, as well as being a popular interest for tourists.

When we were teenagers, on a date, we would say we hit a home run meaning we went all the way. 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, and hit a home run, hence we scored.
